TempleFunds – Tamil Nadu Withdraws Approval for Rs 246 Crore Temple Projects
TempleFunds – The Tamil Nadu government has withdrawn administrative approval for 46 projects proposed under the Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments (HR&CE) Department, with a combined estimated value of nearly Rs 246 crore. The cancelled proposals included the construction of marriage halls and commercial complexes at various locations across the state.

Projects Worth Nearly Rs 246 Crore Put on Hold
According to an official government notification and a statement released on Friday, approval has been rescinded for 29 marriage hall projects valued at Rs 115.77 crore. In addition, 17 planned commercial complex projects worth Rs 130.08 crore have also been dropped. Together, the cancelled initiatives account for Rs 245.85 crore.
Authorities noted that although these projects had previously received administrative clearance, they had not yet entered the execution stage.
Legal and Financial Factors Influenced the Decision
The government cited multiple reasons for reconsidering the projects. Official documents indicated that several proposals were facing legal complications and pending court-related issues. Apart from legal concerns, the financial impact on temples was also considered before the decision was made.
Officials said the move represents a broader reassessment of how resources under temple administration should be allocated in the future.
Focus Shifts Towards Temple-Centric Activities
Sources within the HR&CE Department suggested that the government now prefers directing temple funds towards activities that are more closely linked to religious institutions and their maintenance.
According to department officials, the intention is to prioritize initiatives that directly support temples, devotees, preservation efforts, and cultural heritage. The administration believes that available financial resources should be used for projects that strengthen temple infrastructure and conservation rather than commercial ventures designed primarily to generate revenue.
New Welfare Schemes Expected
The official statement further revealed that funds made available through the cancellation of these projects would be redirected towards fresh schemes aimed at benefiting temples and worshippers.
While specific details have not yet been announced, authorities indicated that upcoming initiatives would focus on improving services, facilities, and development works associated with temples across Tamil Nadu.
Policy Shift Marks Change in Approach
The decision carries political significance because the projects had originally received administrative sanction during the tenure of the previous DMK-led government. At that time, the development of commercial assets such as shopping complexes and marriage halls under temple administration was encouraged as a means of creating additional revenue streams.
Observers view the latest move as a clear shift from that earlier strategy. The cancellation is considered one of the most notable policy actions undertaken by the HR&CE Department since the change in government.
Opposition Raises Objections
The DMK has strongly criticized the government’s decision. Party representatives argued that the cancelled projects were intended to provide practical benefits to devotees while also creating long-term income sources for temples.
According to opposition leaders, marriage halls planned near temples would have offered affordable venues for Hindu families while supporting temple finances through rental revenue. They also maintained that commercial complexes were designed to strengthen the financial stability of temple institutions.
The controversy is expected to spark wider discussion about the balance between religious administration and commercial development, as well as the most appropriate use of temple resources in the state
