Elections – BJP’s Tamilisai Soundararajan Focuses on Heritage Revival in Mylapore

Elections –  Senior BJP leader and former Telangana Governor Tamilisai Soundararajan has framed her election campaign in Chennai’s Mylapore constituency around the idea of restoring its historical and cultural significance. Speaking during her outreach across the iconic Mada Streets, she described the constituency as a central pillar of the city’s identity and a place deeply rooted in Tamil Nadu’s civilisational heritage.

Heritage and identity at the centre of campaign

Mylapore, known for its centuries-old temples, cultural institutions, and tightly knit residential communities, has long been regarded as one of Chennai’s most traditional neighbourhoods. Soundararajan emphasised that preserving this legacy is essential, calling the constituency the “heart of Chennai” where every street and structure reflects a rich historical past.

However, even as heritage remains a key talking point, the area faces several modern urban challenges that residents say cannot be overlooked.

Residents highlight civic concerns

Many locals have raised issues related to infrastructure, particularly traffic congestion and water management. Residents living along South Mada Street pointed out recurring flooding and clogged drainage systems as major problems that require urgent attention.

Others stressed that while development is necessary, it should not come at the cost of Mylapore’s distinct character. The balance between modernization and preservation has emerged as a recurring concern among voters.

Political criticism and governance debate

During her campaign, Soundararajan also criticised the ruling Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK), alleging that civic conditions in the constituency have deteriorated in recent years. Referring to earlier promises of transforming Chennai into a global city, she argued that Mylapore has instead experienced a decline in infrastructure quality.

She pointed to issues such as poorly maintained roads, blocked stormwater drains, and concerns raised by local communities, including fishermen affected by housing changes. According to her, these problems reflect gaps in governance and have led to growing dissatisfaction among residents.

At the same time, voters have expressed a desire for greater accountability from all political parties. Some residents noted that election promises must translate into visible improvements on the ground rather than remain limited to campaign rhetoric.

Alliance strategy and electoral significance

The BJP is contesting the election in partnership with the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK), aiming to consolidate opposition votes against the DMK in a region traditionally dominated by Dravidian parties.

For the BJP, Mylapore represents more than just a constituency—it is viewed as a strategic opportunity to strengthen its presence in urban Tamil Nadu. The outcome here could influence the party’s broader ambitions in the state.

Focus on local governance and accessibility

Outlining her approach, Soundararajan highlighted the importance of addressing issues at the street level. She said her focus would be on improving day-to-day civic services and maintaining close engagement with residents. Her campaign messaging has stressed accessibility and direct interaction with voters as key priorities.

Women’s safety enters political discourse

Another major theme in her campaign has been women’s safety and empowerment. Soundararajan framed the election as a broader issue concerning the security and rights of women in the state, drawing comparisons with past leadership models.

However, voters, particularly younger residents, have called for practical and detailed action plans from all parties rather than general statements. Many believe that safety concerns should be addressed through clear policies and measurable outcomes.

DMK defends performance

The ruling DMK has rejected criticism and defended its governance record, pointing to ongoing infrastructure projects and welfare initiatives across Tamil Nadu. Party leaders maintain that development efforts are underway and that improvements will continue in the coming years.

A constituency weighing competing narratives

As the election approaches, Mylapore voters are faced with contrasting perspectives—calls for heritage restoration and administrative change on one side, and continuity and ongoing development on the other.

The constituency’s strong cultural identity, combined with active civic engagement, makes it a closely watched contest. For Soundararajan, the election is both a bid for political resurgence and a test of the BJP-AIADMK alliance’s strength in the state.
