Assam: Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma highlights state government’s continued crackdown on drug trafficking
Guwahati: On Tuesday, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma emphasized the state government’s ongoing campaign against drug trafficking under Mission #AssamAgainstDrugs, claiming that since 2021, more than 20,000 people have been arrested and more than Rs2,600 crore worth of drugs have been confiscated.

“Since 2021, we have taken a firm stand against the menace of drugs,” CM Sarma said on social media. To further the goal of a #DrugsFreeBharat, we have arrested over 20,000 persons and recovered over Rs2600cr worth of different substances under our Mission #AssamAgainstDrugs.”
Assam Police detained 20,293 people, confiscated or destroyed drugs worth Rs2,604.21 crore, and filed 12,398 charges under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, according to official statistics.
553 kg of heroin, 24 kg of crystal methamphetamine, 1.61 crore pills or capsules, and 12.44 lakh bottles of cough syrup containing codeine are among the main items recovered during the raid. Furthermore, 3,324 kg of poppy straw, 621 kg of opium, and 1.25 lakh kg of ganja were confiscated. During several anti-drug operations, authorities also seized Rs6.85 crore in cash.
After four years of relentless work under the mission, the Chief Minister reiterated his government’s commitment to make Assam drug-free as part of the broader national aim of creating a #DrugsFreeBharat.
CM Sarma said that heroin valued at Rs3.16 crore was recently confiscated and a drug dealer was detained as part of the current campaign, demonstrating the government’s resolute anti-drug efforts.
CM said in a tweet on X that “@GuwahatiPol intercepted a vehicle en route from Silchar to Guwahati based on secret information and recovered 395.67 grams of heroin worth Rs 3.16 crore and one drug peddler was arrested.” Assam continues to clamp down on narcotics networks with ruthlessness.
In the state’s Kokrajhar and Golaghat districts, Assam police previously conducted two significant narcotics bust operations, resulting in the arrest of three individuals and the seizure of significant amounts of heroin and marijuana.
