ElectionResults – Vijay Secures Majority to Form Tamil Nadu Government
ElectionResults – Actor-turned-politician Vijay appears set to lead Tamil Nadu’s next government after reportedly securing the crucial support needed to cross the majority mark in the state assembly.

After days of uncertainty over numbers, sources indicated that the Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK) has decided to extend unconditional backing to the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK). The move is expected to help the Vijay-led alliance comfortably reach the required majority needed to form the government in Tamil Nadu.
Support From VCK Changes Political Equation
The latest development significantly alters the political landscape in the state. Before the VCK’s support, the TVK alliance reportedly had the backing of 116 newly elected MLAs, including legislators from Congress and Left parties. With two seats from the VCK likely joining the coalition, the alliance now reaches the crucial figure of 118 MLAs required to establish a government in the assembly.
Although the VCK has not yet issued a formal public statement, political sources suggested that its support has effectively ended the uncertainty surrounding government formation.
Congress and Left Parties Take Different Positions
The coalition discussions also highlighted differing approaches among alliance partners. Left parties reportedly agreed to support the TVK government without demanding cabinet positions. Congress, however, is believed to have sought representation in the new ministry and is expected to push for two cabinet berths as part of its support arrangement.
Despite negotiations with alliance partners, the TVK remains the dominant force in the new assembly. The party, founded only two years ago by Vijay, delivered a major electoral breakthrough by emerging as the single largest party in the state. The outcome has reshaped Tamil Nadu politics and weakened the long-standing dominance of the DMK and AIADMK.
Historic Shift in Tamil Nadu Politics
The election result marks one of the biggest political transitions in recent decades. For more than sixty years, Tamil Nadu’s political landscape had largely remained under the influence of the DMK and AIADMK. The latest verdict, however, signaled voter appetite for a new political alternative.
According to available figures, the TVK secured 108 seats in the assembly elections. Vijay himself won in two constituencies, strengthening his personal political standing. Meanwhile, the DMK finished with 59 seats, while the AIADMK secured 47 seats.
Other parties also registered smaller but notable performances. Congress won five seats and PMK obtained four. The VCK, IUML, CPI and CPM each secured two seats, while BJP, DMDK and AMMK managed one seat each.
Governor Awaited Proof of Majority
Before the alliance numbers became clearer, Vijay reportedly held several meetings at Lok Bhavan in an effort to demonstrate majority support before Governor RV Arlekar. Sources indicated that the governor insisted on written letters of support from at least 118 MLAs before inviting the TVK leader to form the government.
The absence of a clear position from the VCK had created uncertainty during the process. Conflicting political signals reportedly delayed a final decision and prolonged suspense over whether Vijay would be able to gather the required support.
With the latest backing now believed to be in place, the path appears clearer for Vijay’s swearing-in ceremony and the formation of Tamil Nadu’s first TVK-led coalition government
