Politics – West Bengal’s political landscape has long witnessed shifting loyalties and dramatic rivalries, but few confrontations have been as intense as the ongoing contest between Mamata Banerjee and Suvendu Adhikari. Once close allies, the two leaders now stand on opposite sides of a deeply polarised political battlefield, with their rivalry shaping the narrative of one of India’s most closely watched state elections.
From Alliance to Opposition
Mamata Banerjee built her political career through the Congress before launching the Trinamool Congress, carving out an independent path in state politics. In contrast, Suvendu Adhikari hails from an influential political family in East Midnapore. His father, Sisir Adhikari, held a prominent position in the Congress and served as a Union minister. The family’s dominance in the region has often earned them a reputation for strong local influence.
Suvendu Adhikari began his political journey with the Congress and later joined the Trinamool Congress in its early days. Over time, he rose steadily, securing a seat in the state assembly and establishing himself as a key figure within the party.
Rise During Mass Movements
Adhikari’s political stature grew significantly during the Nandigram protests in 2007. The agitation was sparked by opposition to a proposed industrial project that required large-scale land acquisition. As a leading organiser of the movement, Adhikari played a crucial role in mobilising resistance, which drew widespread attention across the state.
The unrest reached a turning point when police action resulted in multiple deaths, triggering outrage and forcing the government to reconsider its plans. Alongside protests in Singur, the Nandigram movement contributed to a broader shift in public sentiment, ultimately helping the Trinamool Congress end decades of Left Front rule in 2011.
Key Role in Government
Following the party’s electoral success, Adhikari emerged as one of Banerjee’s most trusted associates. He represented the Tamluk constituency in Parliament and later returned to state politics, taking charge of important departments in the government. His administrative responsibilities and political reach reinforced his position as a central figure in the party’s leadership.
Growing Differences Within Party
Over time, however, internal tensions began to surface. Observers noted that Adhikari’s influence appeared to decline as other leaders gained prominence within the party structure. Differences over strategy and decision-making reportedly widened, leading to visible signs of discontent.
In late 2020, Adhikari resigned from his ministerial roles and subsequently left the Trinamool Congress. Soon after, he joined the Bharatiya Janata Party, marking a significant shift in the state’s political equations ahead of the 2021 assembly elections.
High-Stakes Electoral Clash
The 2021 election witnessed a direct contest between Banerjee and Adhikari in Nandigram. The campaign drew national attention, symbolising the broader political battle in the state. While the Trinamool Congress secured a decisive victory overall, Adhikari managed to defeat Banerjee in the constituency, reinforcing his position within his new party.
Renewed Contest in 2026
As the 2026 elections approach, the rivalry has entered a new phase. Adhikari, now serving as the Leader of the Opposition, is seen as a key contender in the state’s political future. Expanding his challenge, he has chosen to contest not only from Nandigram but also from Bhabanipur, a constituency closely associated with Banerjee.
The move has intensified the political atmosphere, with both leaders exchanging sharp criticisms during campaign events. Banerjee has framed the challenge as an attempt to disrupt local stability, while Adhikari has accused the ruling party of administrative irregularities and governance issues.
Symbolic Battle Beyond Numbers
The contest in Bhabanipur is being viewed as more than just another electoral race. Much like the Nandigram face-off, it carries symbolic weight, representing the broader struggle for political dominance in West Bengal. Regardless of the overall election outcome, the result in this constituency is expected to carry significant political implications.
