Elections – Tensions Rise After Alleged Attack on TMC MP Vehicle
Elections – A fresh controversy erupted during the final phase of election campaigning in West Bengal after a Trinamool Congress (TMC) Member of Parliament alleged that her vehicle was attacked in Hooghly district on Monday. The accusation has been firmly denied by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which instead claimed that its own workers were targeted in the incident.
Allegations of Attack During Campaign Movement
Mitali Bag, the TMC MP from Arambagh, stated that the incident took place in Goghat while she was travelling to attend a rally led by party general secretary Abhishek Banerjee. According to her account, her vehicle came under attack near the office of a BJP candidate. She alleged that stones were thrown, damaging the car and shattering its windows.
In a live video shared on social media, Bag appeared visibly distressed as she described the situation. She claimed that individuals armed with sticks blocked her route and then targeted her vehicle. Bag said she was seated in the front while other party members were travelling with her.
Appeal to Election Authorities
Following the incident, the MP called upon the Election Commission to intervene and ensure accountability. She expressed concern over the safety of public representatives, particularly women, and urged officials to examine the situation closely. Bag also highlighted her identity as a Dalit woman, suggesting that the attack reflected broader issues of safety and political hostility.
She later sought medical attention at a nearby health centre, where she was assisted by healthcare staff. Reports indicated that she sustained minor injuries due to broken glass fragments.
BJP Rejects Claims, Offers Counter Version
The BJP dismissed the allegations, calling them baseless and politically motivated. Party spokesperson Debjit Sarkar claimed that no such attack on the MP took place. Instead, he alleged that TMC supporters initiated violence by approaching BJP workers gathered at a local office.
According to the BJP’s version, several of its workers were injured during the confrontation. Party leaders argued that the claims made by Bag were an attempt to divert attention from violence allegedly carried out by TMC supporters.
Conflicting Accounts from Ground
Adding to the dispute, local BJP leaders stated that their campaign activities were disrupted by an attack involving sticks, bricks, and other weapons. They claimed that dozens of party workers were hurt, with some requiring hospital treatment. The BJP also alleged that its candidate’s vehicle was damaged during the clash.
On the other hand, TMC representatives rejected these accusations. A local party leader countered that BJP workers had entered residential areas and caused unrest, including throwing explosives, which led to tensions among residents.
Election Commission Seeks Report
Officials from the Chief Electoral Officer’s office confirmed that a detailed report has been requested regarding the incident. Authorities are reviewing available CCTV footage and social media recordings to establish facts. Central security forces have also been deployed in the area to maintain order.
The situation highlights the heightened tensions often seen during election periods in the state. With both parties presenting sharply different narratives, the responsibility now lies with election authorities to verify the sequence of events and ensure a fair environment for voters.
