Governance – Nitish Kumar Steps Down, BJP Prepares New Leadership Transition

Governance –  Nitish Kumar has stepped down as the Chief Minister of Bihar after a long tenure marked by multiple terms in office, signaling a major shift in the state’s political landscape. He submitted his resignation to Governor Lt Gen Syed Ata Hasnain (retd) at Lok Bhavan on Tuesday, shortly after dissolving his council of ministers. The move comes as he transitions to a role in the Rajya Sabha, where he was sworn in as a Member of Parliament last week.

Final Day in Office Marks Political Shift

Earlier in the day, Kumar chaired what turned out to be his last cabinet meeting as chief minister. The meeting was attended by senior leaders, including Deputy Chief Ministers Samrat Choudhary and Vijay Kumar Sinha, along with other ministers and officials. His resignation brings an end to nearly two decades of leadership across multiple terms, making him one of the longest-serving figures in Bihar’s political history.

In a public statement shared later, Kumar emphasized that his administration had consistently worked toward public welfare and development. He noted that stepping down was a considered decision following years of service, adding that the responsibility would now pass on to a new leadership.

Assurance of Support to Incoming Government

Kumar also expressed his willingness to support the next government, assuring full cooperation and guidance. He stated that the transition should not disrupt ongoing development efforts and that continuity in governance would remain important for Bihar’s progress.

Reflecting on his tenure, he recalled the formation of the National Democratic Alliance government in the state in November 2005. According to him, that period marked the beginning of a governance model focused on law and order and sustained development initiatives. Over the years, he said, efforts were made to ensure that benefits reached different sections of society, regardless of social or economic background.

Focus on Inclusive Development

During his time in office, Kumar highlighted initiatives aimed at improving infrastructure, education, and welfare schemes. Special attention was given to programs targeting women and young people, which he described as key to long-term growth. He maintained that development work was carried out across sectors, with an emphasis on inclusivity.

He also pointed out the role of support from the central government in accelerating development projects within the state. According to him, such cooperation would continue to play a crucial role in Bihar’s future progress.

BJP Set to Form New Government

With Kumar’s resignation, the Bharatiya Janata Party is now preparing to form the next government in Bihar. Senior leader Samrat Choudhary has been chosen as the legislative leader and is expected to be sworn in as chief minister soon. His name was proposed during a party meeting and received unanimous support from party legislators.

Choudhary, who previously served as deputy chief minister, is seen as a key figure in the party’s state leadership. His selection marks a significant moment, as he is set to lead Bihar under a BJP-led government in the post-Nitish Kumar era.

Vision for Bihar’s Future

Speaking about his plans, Choudhary stated that his priority would be to work towards a developed Bihar. He emphasized continuity in governance while also aiming to introduce new initiatives to boost economic growth and public welfare. His leadership is expected to focus on strengthening infrastructure, improving administrative efficiency, and expanding opportunities for the state’s population.

The transition represents a notable change in Bihar’s political direction, with a new leadership taking charge after years of continuity under Kumar. As the state prepares for this shift, attention will remain on how the incoming government builds on past efforts while setting its own course for the future.
