Railways – Bengaluru to Mumbai Vande Bharat Sleeper Train Gets Approval
Railways – India’s railway network is set for another major upgrade as the government clears a new overnight Vande Bharat service linking Bengaluru and Mumbai, strengthening long-distance travel options.

Approval Signals Push for Modern Rail Expansion
Nearly three months after the launch of the Kamakhya–Howrah Vande Bharat sleeper train, the Union Railway Ministry has given the green light for a similar service between Bengaluru and Mumbai. The decision reflects a broader strategy to modernise long-distance rail travel while meeting rising passenger demand for faster and more comfortable journeys.
In a communication dated April 5, 2026, Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw informed Bengaluru Central MP PC Mohan that the proposed sleeper train has been formally approved. The service will operate between KSR Bengaluru Railway Station and Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) in Mumbai, two of the country’s busiest rail hubs.
Focus on Passenger Convenience and Efficiency
The minister noted that the introduction of the new train is aimed at improving public convenience. The Bengaluru–Mumbai corridor is one of India’s most frequently travelled routes, connecting major business, technology, and financial centres.
Once operational, the sleeper version of the Vande Bharat train is expected to offer a faster and more comfortable overnight travel option. Passengers can anticipate upgraded onboard facilities, improved safety features, and reduced travel time compared to conventional trains.
Part of Larger Production Plan
The approval also fits into the government’s broader plan to ramp up production of Vande Bharat sleeper coaches. Officials have set a target to roll out at least 12 such sleeper train sets by December 2026. This initiative is designed to expand premium rail services across longer routes, where overnight travel is essential.
The move comes at a time when Indian Railways is focusing heavily on modernisation, including new-generation trains, upgraded infrastructure, and enhanced passenger services.
Growing Popularity of Vande Bharat Trains
Since their introduction on the New Delhi–Varanasi route in February 2019, Vande Bharat trains have seen steady growth in usage. Over 9.1 crore passengers have travelled on these trains across more than one lakh trips, indicating strong acceptance among travellers.
In the financial year 2024–25 alone, nearly 3.98 crore passengers used Vande Bharat services. This marked a significant increase compared to around 2.97 crore passengers in the previous year, reflecting a growth rate of approximately 34 percent.
Sleeper Variant Shows Strong Demand
The success of the Kamakhya–Howrah Vande Bharat sleeper service has played a key role in accelerating expansion plans. Within just three months of operation, the train completed 119 trips and recorded occupancy levels exceeding 100 percent. It carried around 1.21 lakh passengers during this period, highlighting strong demand for premium overnight travel.
This performance has reinforced confidence among railway authorities about the potential of sleeper variants, particularly on long-distance routes where passengers prefer comfortable night journeys.
Expected Impact on Key Travel Corridor
The Bengaluru–Mumbai route is expected to benefit significantly from the new service. Both cities are major economic centres, and improved connectivity could enhance business travel, tourism, and regional mobility.
With modern design, better punctuality, and enhanced passenger amenities, the upcoming sleeper train is likely to set a new benchmark for overnight rail journeys in India. While the exact launch date has not yet been announced, the approval marks a crucial step toward its eventual rollout.
