“On Saturday, Sajeeb Wazed Joy obtained his citizenship certificate after taking the oath of US citizenship at the US Citizenship Center in Washington, DC. He also sought a passport after obtaining the certificate, according to the Bangladesh Pratidin newspaper.

“The oath-taking ceremony was attended by 22 people from different nations. Joy was one of three who were of Bangladeshi descent. He was accompanied by a lawyer. Joy was the second of the three Bangladeshis to take the oath, it continued.

Awami League politician and former State Minister for Information Muhammad Ali Arafat stated, “Since Yunus’s illegitimate administration unlawfully removed Sajeeb Wazed Joy’s Bangladeshi passport, which he used to travel with. He needed to get a US passport in this situation.

According to Arafat, Sajeeb Wazed Joy needs a passport in order to travel outside of the United States, and a green card does not permit travel outside of the country.

“You cannot travel outside of the United States with a green card. To see his mother or travel outside of the United States, Joy needs a passport. He had to get a US passport under the circumstances,” Arafat said.

In August of last year, a student-led rebellion overthrew Bangladesh’s prime minister, Sheikh Hasina. After Hasina fled to India, Nobel Laureate Muhammad Yunus created an interim government.

The Awami League, the nation’s oldest political organization, was outlawed by the interim government of Bangladesh earlier on May 10. The decision was taken to protect national security and sovereignty, according to the press statement.

“Until the Bangladesh Awami League and its leaders’ trial is over, the Advisory Council meeting addressed the need to safeguard the nation’s security and sovereignty, the safety of the July Movement’s leaders and activists, and the safety of the International Crimes Tribunal’s plaintiffs and witnesses.” In accordance with the Anti-Terrorism Act, the Awami League has decided to outlaw all of its operations, including those conducted online,” the statement said.
