Donald Trump extends deadline for 50% tariffs on all imports from EU
Washington, DC: After speaking with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, US President Donald Trump announced an extension of the deadline in response to his plan to impose a 50% duty on all imports from the European Union, beginning June 1.

Trump said that talks between the two sides will start quickly and that he has agreed to extend the tariff deadline to July 9.
“I received a call today from Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission, requesting an extension on the June 1st deadline on the 50% Tariff with respect to Trade and the European Union,” Trump said on the social networking site Truth Social. It was an honor for me to accept the extension, which was granted on July 9, 2025. According to the Commission President, negotiations will start soon. I appreciate you taking the time to consider this.
Von der Leyen said she was thankful that President Trump had extended the deadline for the planned 50% duty on goods from the European Union. She emphasized the strong commercial ties between the US and the EU and said that Europe is prepared to have quick and decisive negotiations in order to obtain a favorable agreement.
Von der Leyen shared a message on X that said, “Nice call with @POTUS. The most significant and intimate trading connection in the world is between the US and the EU. Europe is prepared to move negotiations forward quickly and forcefully. We would need the time till July 9 in order to negotiate a decent settlement.
Trump accused the European Union a few days ago of exploiting the United States by erecting “powerful trade barriers.”
Trump shared a post on Truth Social that said, “It has been very difficult to work with the European Union, which was established primarily to exploit the United States on trade. It is completely unacceptable that they have a trade deficit with the United States of over $250,000,000 annually as a result of their strong trade barriers, VAT taxes, absurd corporate penalties, non-monetary trade barriers, monetary manipulations, and unwarranted and unfair lawsuits against American companies, among other things. Our conversations with them are not progressing.
“As a result, I am proposing a straight 50% tariff on the European Union, beginning on June 1, 2025,” he said. If the product is made or constructed in the US, there is no tariff. I appreciate you taking the time to consider this.
