One of the holiest months in the Hindu lunar calendar is “Sawan,” which falls in the fifth month. During this season, every Monday is considered to be a particularly lucky day to fast and ask Lord Shiva for his blessings. Goddess Parvati, Lord Shiva’s spouse, is honored on all Tuesdays, or Mangalwar, throughout the month of Shravan.

In Hindu mythology, the month of Sawan is particularly significant because it is said that Lord Shiva ate the poison that resulted from the ocean’s churning (Samudra Manthan), protecting the cosmos from its harmful consequences.

During this time, devotees fast and pray in order to ask Lord Shiva for his blessings.

Many decide to simply consume fruits, milk, and some things that are allowed while fasting and to avoid eating grains altogether.

During Sawan month, many homes and temples fervently pursue the usual customs of reciting Shiva mantras, singing bhajans (devotional songs), and conducting Rudrabhishek (ceremonial washing of Shiva Lingam with holy ingredients).
