Rahul Gandhi, a Congress MP, vowed to carry out his father’s wishes in an emotional homage to his father, former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi.

“Papa, your memories guide me at every step,” Rahul Gandhi said in a post on the social networking site X. I’m determined to fulfill your unrealized ambitions, and I will undoubtedly do so.”

He visited the former prime minister Veer Bhumi’s memorial site earlier in the day to pay floral homage to Rajiv Gandhi with Mallikarjun Kharge and other Congress leaders.

The former prime minister was referred to as “a great son of India” by Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge, who also emphasized the important choices made under his direction, like reducing the voting age to 18, bolstering Panchayati Raj and leading the telecom and IT revolution.

A beloved son of India, Rajiv Gandhi gave millions of Indians hope. His brave and imaginative actions played a crucial role in preparing India for the possibilities and challenges of the twenty-first century. In a post on X, Kharge listed these steps: lowering the voting age to 18, bolstering Panchayati Raj, leading the telecom and IT revolution, putting in place a computerization program, securing long-term peace agreements, starting a universal immunization program, and introducing a new education policy that emphasizes inclusive learning.

After his mother, then-prime minister Indira Gandhi, was assassinated in 1984, Rajiv Gandhi assumed leadership of the Congress. When he took office in October 1984, he was 40 years old and India’s youngest prime minister.

Up until December 2, 1989, he was India’s prime minister. Rajiv Gandhi, who was born on August 20, 1944, was killed on May 21, 1991, during an electoral rally in Sriperumbudur, Tamil Nadu, by a suicide bomber affiliated with the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE).
