PM Modi pays tribute to former Jharkhand CM Shibu Soren on his demise

New Delhi: Shibu Soren, a former chief minister of Jharkhand and patron of the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM), died this morning in the nation’s capital. Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid his last tributes to him on Monday.

The former Jharkhand leader was admitted to Sir Ganga Hospital, where PM Modi visited.

“To honor Shri Shibu Soren Ji, I visited Sir Ganga Ram Church. met his family as well. The Prime Minister wrote on social media on X, “My thoughts are with Hemant Ji, Kalpana Ji, and the supporters of Shri Shibu Soren Ji.”

Additionally, he shared images from the hospital, one of which shows him comforting a distraught Hemant Soren.

In an earlier post, Prime Minister Modi referred to Shibu Soren as “a grassroots leader who rose through the ranks of public life with unwavering dedication to the people.”

“He had a special interest in strengthening the impoverished, oppressed, and indigenous populations. His death was painful. I’m thinking about his supporters and family. Sent condolences to Jharkhand Chief Minister Shri Hemant Soren Ji. “Om Shanti,” said the Prime Minister.

Hemant Soren, the chief minister of Jharkhand and the son of Shibu Soren, made the announcement on social media today.

Speaker Rabindra Nath Mahato said today that the Jharkhand Assembly’s Monsoon Session has been postponed sine die due to the death of the JMM founder. The first day of the Assembly was Friday, August 1.

Beginning Monday, the Jharkhand government announced a three-day period of mourning.

The Jharkhand government’s statement said, “The State Government has decided to observe 03 (three) days of state mourning from August 4 to August 6 in honor of the late Honourable former Chief Minister-cum-Rajya Sabha MP.”

All state government offices will be closed, no state event will be held, and the national flag will be flown at half-mast on all buildings throughout the period of mourning.

Other political figures were also seen coming to the Sir Ganga Ram hospital this morning to express their condolences, including prominent DMK politicians A. Raja and TR Baalu.

Shibu Soren, the leader of the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha and the former chief minister of Jharkhand, died on Monday morning in New Delhi at the age of 81 after a protracted illness.

The former chief minister was admitted to the Sri Ganga Ram Hospital in the nation’s capital, where it was reported that Soren had a renal condition and had had a stroke 1.5 months before. For the previous month, he was kept on life support.

In honor of the life of the tribal leader who spearheaded the push for a separate Jharkhand state, tributes have flooded in from all across the country.

Amit Shah, the Union Home Minister, recalled Soren’s fight for the indigenous groups’ rights.

Amit Shah shared an X post that said, “It is very sorry to hear of the passing of former Jharkhand Chief Minister Shri Shibu Soren ji. For many years, he fought for the rights and self-determination of Jharkhand’s indigenous people. He struck a chord with the general public because of his straightforward demeanor and modest character.

Mallikarjun Kharge, the head of the Congress, also reflected on Soren’s role in the battle for land, water, and forest rights as well as his push for Jharkhand’s statehood.

“I regret the loss of Shibu Soren ji, the founder of the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha, the former Chief Minister of Jharkhand, and a former Union Minister. Kharge wrote on X, “He devoted his life to the fight for a distinct state of Jharkhand and the rights of its people over land, water, and forests, as well as the preservation of tribal culture.”

Shibu Soren, the party’s founding patron, headed the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha for 38 years. He was Jharkhand’s chief minister three times: in 2005, 2008–2009, and 2009–2010.

Known as “Dishom Guru,” he spearheaded the campaign for a separate Jharkhand state and cofounded the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha with A.K. Roy and Binod Bihari Mahato. In 2000, his aspirations for the Jharkhand people to have their own distinct identity were realized.

Soren served as a Rajya Sabha MP for two terms and was elected to the Lok Sabha eight times throughout his four-decade political career.
