PM Modi departs on five-nation visit during which he will attend the BRICS summit

New Delhi: On Wednesday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi left on a five-nation trip that would include talks with the leaders of Ghana, Trinidad and Tobago, Argentina, and Namibia to deepen bilateral ties as well as the BRICS Summit.

Ghana will be the first of PM Modi’s five-nation tour. The Prime Minister’s visit to the African nation will be his first bilateral visit.

The Prime Minister and the President of Ghana will assess the robust bilateral relationship and explore ways to further it via development cooperation, defense, energy, and economic cooperation during the visit.

According to a Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) announcement, this visit would underline the two nations’ shared commitment to strengthening India’s involvement with the African Union and the ECOWAS [Economic Community of West African States] and to developing bilateral relations. After thirty years, the Indian Prime Minister is finally visiting Ghana.

During the fourth phase of his trip, PM Modi will visit Brazil from July 5–8 to attend the 17th BRICS Summit 2025. He will then make a state visit to the South American nation. PM Modi will be visiting Brazil for the fourth time.

Rio de Janeiro will host the 17th BRICS Leaders’ Summit. PM Modi will discuss important global topics during the summit, such as global governance reform, peace and security, multilateralism, responsible AI usage, climate action, global health, and economic and financial challenges.

On the margins of the summit, the prime minister is also anticipated to have a number of bilateral talks. As part of his state visit to Brazil, PM Modi will travel to Brasilia, where he will meet with President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva of Brazil to discuss bilaterally how the two nations can expand their strategic partnership in areas of mutual interest, such as trade, defense, energy, space, technology, agriculture, health, and connecting people to people.

PM Modi will visit Trinidad & Tobago (T&T) on July 3–4 as part of the second leg of his trip. This will be his first trip to the nation as prime minister and the first time he has visited Trinidad & Tobago bilaterally since 1999.

PM Modi will address further boosting bilateral relations with Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar and President Christine Carla Kangaloo of Trinidad & Tobago during the visit. Additionally, PM Modi is anticipated to speak to a joint session of the Trinidad and Tobago Parliament.

According to the MEA announcement, the Prime Minister’s visit to Trinidad and Tobago will give the two nations’ long-standing and enduring connections a new breath of life. On July 4-5, PM Modi will go to Argentina for the third phase of his trip.

In order to review current cooperation and explore ways to further strengthen bilateral ties in important areas such as defense, agriculture, mining, oil and gas, renewable energy, trade and investment, and people-to-people ties, PM Modi is scheduled to meet with Argentine President Javier Milei.

According to the announcement, the Prime Minister’s bilateral visit would strengthen Argentina’s and India’s complex strategic partnership.

On July 9, PM Modi will begin a state visit to Namibia as the last stop of his tour. This will be the prime minister’s maiden trip to Namibia and the third time that India has sent a prime minister to Namibia.

PM Modi will speak with President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah one-on-one when he is there. Additionally, PM Modi will honor the late Sam Nujoma, Namibia’s first president and founding father.

According to the MEA announcement, he is also anticipated to give a speech in Namibia’s Parliament. It also said that the Prime Minister’s visit is a reminder of India’s rich and complex historical relationship with Namibia.
