Congress leader Pawan Khera questions Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s “silence” on claims made by Donald Trump

New Delhi: Congressman Pawan Khera questioned Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s “silence” on Thursday on US President Donald Trump’s many assertions that he mediated the resolution of India-Pakistan hostilities.

Khera questioned PM Modi for not refuting Donald Trump’s repeated assertions that he got Operation Sindoor halted, referring to Trump’s latest claim for credit during a White House meeting with South African President Cyril Ramaphosa. Khera noted this is Trump’s eighth such claim.

“President Trump has now claimed to have halted Operation Sindoor eight times. He asserts that he persuaded India to terminate Operation Sindoor via commerce. Prime Minister Modi has never once denied this assertion. What is meant by this silence? On X, Pawan Khera wrote.

The US president had earlier said once again that he helped to defuse tensions between the two countries by facilitating understanding via trade talks.

While acknowledging the difficulties encountered throughout the process, Trump emphasized his personal relationship with Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

“If you look at what we recently accomplished with India and Pakistan, we resolved the whole issue, and I believe I did it via trade. We have a significant business with India. We’re working on a major project with Pakistan. The gunfire was becoming worse and worse, louder and bigger, and further and deeper into the country, but you knew that someone had to be the last to shoot. In a meeting with Cyril Ramaphosa, Trump said, “We talked to them and…we got it settled, and then something happened two days later, and they said it was Trump’s fault, but India is my friend… Modi, he’s a great guy, and Pakistan has some excellent people and some really good leaders.”

India conducted ‘Operation Sindoor’ in response to the terror assault in Pahalgam on April 22 that murdered 26 people, which led to the end of hostilities between the two countries.

India has denied the US President’s allegations and reiterated its policy of bilaterally addressing any issue pertaining to the Union territory of Jammu and Kashmir with Pakistan.

“As you are aware, our country has always held the view that India and Pakistan must deal with each other directly on any matters relating to the Union territory of Jammu and Kashmir. The aforementioned policy remains unchanged. As you are aware, Pakistan’s unlawful occupation of Indian territory remains the unresolved issue,” the Ministry of External Affairs said.

The MEA went on to say that since the start of “Operation Sindoor” and the end of hostilities, the “issue of trade” has not come up between Indian and US officials.

“Indian and American authorities discussed the changing military situation from the start of OPERATION SINDOOR on May 7 till the agreement on the halt of shooting and military action on May 10. None of these conversations touched on the subject of trade,” MEA said.
