In court filings, the administration of US President Donald Trump has cautioned that removing tariffs placed on a number of nations, including India, will result in economic retribution from the US and jeopardize international peace initiatives.
US Solicitor General John Sawyer urged the justices to uphold these responsibilities, which the lower court ruled unlawful, in an appeal submitted to the Supreme Court that Aaj Tak obtained. “The stakes in this case are very high,” the appeal said. The tariff was referred to in the text as a “shield that protects against economic devastation” and “an important part of the efforts for peace in Ukraine.”
“We recently imposed tariffs on India to deal with the ongoing national emergency over the Russia-Ukraine war because it has been buying Russian energy products,” the Trump administration said. The United States would be on the verge of economic collapse if these tariffs were lifted. The United States has levied a 25% tax on India, citing the widening trade imbalance. Additionally, a 25% tariff was imposed for resisting demands to stop trading in oil with Russia. This implies that India is now subject to a 50% import tariff overall.
What was the lower court’s ruling
The US Federal Circuit Court of Appeals ruled 7–4 that Trump had overreached himself by imposing broad tariffs under emergency economic powers, and the Trump administration is appealing that ruling. On the contrary, the administration has maintained that these actions are bringing about “peace and unprecedented economic prosperity” and enlisting nations in a new system of trade with Washington.

“With tariffs, America is a rich country; without tariffs, America is a poor country,” the government said in its report. It said that the removal of these levies would damage America’s defense-industrial system, impact its $1.2 trillion yearly trade imbalance, and cast doubt on continuing international discussions.
The memo claims that “six major trading partners and the 27-nation European Union have already joined framework agreements” as a consequence of these levies, further solidifying America’s standing in the world economy.

“One year ago, America was a ‘dead country,’ and now, thanks to the trillions of dollars that countries that have been robbing us of our very lives are giving us, America is a strong, economically capable, and respected country again,” the paperwork said.
In order to demonstrate that the president is empowered to levy broad import tariffs under federal law, the Trump administration has encouraged the Supreme Court to provide a decision quickly. A lower court decision that determined that the majority of Trump’s tariffs were an unlawful use of emergency powers is being challenged in the appeal.
