32 people have been killed in the Vaishno Devi avalanche
Officials said on Wednesday that 32 people had died in the Vaishno Devi landslide. The intense, unrelenting rain caused a landslide that injured at least 20 persons. About halfway through the 12-kilometer, serpentine journey from Katra to the temple, a landslide occurred. There are two ways to reach the shrine; the Himkoti hike path had been closed since the morning, while the old route continued until 1:30 pm, when officials decided to halt it till further notice due to the heavy rain.
Around 3 p.m. on Tuesday, the mountainside actually broke way and rocks, boulders, and stones came crashing down, taking pilgrims by surprise and suspending the trip to the shrine.
