Politics – Clashes Reported in Central Kolkata Ahead of Prime Minister’s Rally
Politics – The political atmosphere in Kolkata witnessed a sudden spike in tension on Saturday after clashes reportedly broke out between supporters of the Trinamool Congress (TMC) and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) near Girish Park in the central part of the city.

The incident occurred roughly five kilometers away from the Brigade Parade Ground, where Prime Minister Narendra Modi was scheduled to address a major public gathering later in the day. The rally was expected to attract thousands of supporters and marked a significant political event ahead of the upcoming West Bengal Assembly elections.
Confrontation Erupts as Supporters Head Toward Rally
According to BJP supporters, the confrontation began when groups of party workers were moving toward the rally venue while chanting slogans in support of the prime minister. Several activists claimed that stones were suddenly thrown at them from nearby areas without any warning.
One BJP worker told a local television channel that the group had not provoked anyone before the attack. He alleged that stones were hurled at them unexpectedly and that some people also shouted abusive remarks during the incident.
Eyewitnesses present in the area offered a broader picture of the situation. They reported that supporters from both parties were involved in the confrontation, with stones being thrown from both sides as tensions quickly escalated. Loud slogans from rival groups were also heard as the situation intensified.
Allegations of Damage to Vehicles
The BJP later claimed that the clashes led to damage to several vehicles in the area. Party workers alleged that cars and other vehicles belonging to their supporters were targeted during the altercation.
However, workers associated with the Trinamool Congress rejected the accusations. Local TMC representatives stated that BJP supporters were the first to start the confrontation. According to them, abusive language was used before stones were thrown.
TMC workers also alleged that stones were thrown at the residence of a local party leader during the disturbance, claiming their members were responding to provocation from the opposing group.
Police Rush to Control the Situation
Soon after the confrontation was reported, police teams were deployed to the area to prevent the situation from worsening. A large contingent of security personnel reached the spot and worked to disperse the groups involved in the clash.
Authorities acted quickly to restore order, given the proximity of the incident to a high-profile political event. Police officials monitored the area closely to ensure that the disturbance did not spread to other parts of the city.
The presence of law enforcement helped calm tensions, although the brief clash added to the already charged political environment surrounding the rally.
Rally Marks Key Political Event Before State Elections
The incident occurred roughly thirty minutes before Prime Minister Narendra Modi was scheduled to address supporters at the Brigade Parade Ground. The rally marked the conclusion of the Bharatiya Janata Party’s statewide Parivartan Yatra, a political campaign conducted across West Bengal ahead of the assembly elections.
The event has been seen as a major show of strength by the party as it seeks to expand its presence in the state’s political landscape. Large numbers of party workers and supporters had been arriving in Kolkata from different districts to attend the gathering.
Development Projects Also on Prime Minister’s Agenda
During his visit to West Bengal, the prime minister was also expected to announce several development initiatives. Officials said that projects worth more than ₹18,000 crore were scheduled to be unveiled or have their foundation stones laid during the visit.
These projects are linked to infrastructure development and other sectors aimed at boosting economic growth in the state.
While the rally proceeded as planned, the earlier clash near Girish Park highlighted the intense political rivalry between the two major parties in West Bengal as the state moves closer to the assembly elections.
