Controversy – Political Storm Builds Over Chakankar’s Alleged Links

Controversy – A major political dispute has unfolded in Maharashtra after images circulated online appeared to show Maharashtra State Commission for Women Chairperson Rupali Chakankar alongside Ashok Kharat, a man recently arrested in a serious sexual assault case.

Chakankar controversy political storm

The issue has triggered sharp reactions from political leaders, with several demanding Chakankar step down from her position as scrutiny over her alleged association with Kharat intensifies.

Arrest and Serious Allegations Against Kharat

Ashok Kharat, a former Merchant Navy officer who later presented himself as an astrologer, was taken into custody in Nashik district earlier this week. Police officials stated that he is accused of sexually assaulting a 35-year-old woman repeatedly over a period of more than three years.

During the investigation, authorities reportedly recovered a pen drive containing 58 videos, some of which are said to be objectionable. Investigators believe Kharat may have used his social and political connections to gain the confidence of women before allegedly exploiting them under the pretext of religious or spiritual practices.

He has been booked under provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita related to rape and criminal intimidation, along with charges under the Maharashtra law aimed at curbing black magic and inhuman practices. Kharat is also associated with the Shree Ishaneshwar Mahadev Temple Trust in Nashik’s Sinnar taluka.

Questions Raised Over Chakankar’s Association

The controversy gained momentum after reports suggested that Rupali Chakankar had links with the temple trust connected to Kharat. Responding to the matter, Minister of State for Home Yogesh Kadam clarified that the criminal case and any potential administrative concerns would be examined separately.

He stated that while the allegations against Kharat are being investigated thoroughly, any questions regarding Chakankar’s role as a trustee, if necessary, would also be looked into.

Several public figures and political leaders are known to have visited Kharat in the past, which has added complexity to the issue.

Social Media Images Add Fuel to Row

The situation escalated further after photos and videos surfaced online, allegedly showing Chakankar participating in religious rituals alongside Kharat. In one such clip, she is seen holding an umbrella for him, which has drawn criticism from opposition leaders.

In response, Chakankar issued a statement distancing herself from Kharat’s alleged activities. She maintained that her interaction with him was limited and that she had no knowledge of the accusations now being investigated.

She also urged the public not to rely solely on social media content to form opinions and emphasized that the matter should be left to legal authorities.

Opposition Demands Resignation

Despite her clarification, opposition parties have intensified their criticism, arguing that her position as head of the Women’s Commission is now compromised.

Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Sanjay Raut described the situation as serious, stating that any perceived connection between the head of a women’s rights body and an accused individual raises troubling questions.

Party leader Sushma Andhare also questioned Chakankar’s ability to continue in the role, suggesting that public trust in the commission could be affected.

From the Nationalist Congress Party, Rupali Thombre called for Chakankar’s resignation, stressing that the position requires credibility and neutrality. Congress leader Vijay Wadettiwar echoed similar concerns, urging a fair and transparent inquiry while stating that moral accountability should be upheld.

Concerns Over Institutional Credibility

Rohini Khadse, representing the women’s wing of the NCP (Sharad Pawar faction), highlighted the importance of maintaining the integrity of the Women’s Commission. She warned that controversies involving its leadership could damage public confidence in the institution.

Former Member of Parliament Chhatrapati Sambhajiraje also emphasized the need for ethical conduct in public life, while social activist Anjali Damania questioned the nature of Chakankar’s association with Kharat, particularly in light of the allegations against him.

Investigation Continues Amid Political Pressure

As the probe into Ashok Kharat’s alleged crimes continues, political pressure on the state government remains strong. Calls for accountability and transparency have grown louder, with demands for action against those linked, directly or indirectly, to the accused.

The situation continues to evolve, with both legal proceedings and political responses likely to shape the next course of events.
