Karnataka hijab ban: Supreme Court reserves order on petitions

New Delhi. The Supreme Court on Thursday reserved its order on petitions challenging the Karnataka High Court's refusal to lift the ban on hijab in educational institutions in the state. The High Court had on March 15 dismissed petitions filed by a section of Muslim girl students of 'Government Pre-University Girls College' in Udupi, seeking permission to wear hijab inside classrooms.

The court had said that (the hijab) is not a part of the obligatory religious practice in Islam. The state government, in an order dated February 5, 2022, had banned the wearing of clothes that obstruct equality, integrity, and public order in schools and colleges.

Several petitions have been filed in the Supreme Court challenging the High Court's decision. A bench of Justice Hemant Gupta and Justice Sudhanshu Dhulia today reserved its verdict on the matter.
